Leaf Behind Moisture & Fall for Hydration
Hi, besties!
Today we’re turning over a new leaf—it’s time to ditch that heavy moisture we cling to during the summer months in favor of the lightweight hydration our hair is craving in the cooler ones.
Let’s get into it, xoxo—
Fun Fact: Our haircare routines should change as the seasons do!
If you haven’t had a chance to read our last blog post, we talked about alllllllll things frizz.
The science behind how it happens, the types of products you want to grab to combat it, and what those products are doing to stop it from happening.
And, today, we’re going to talk about the yin to frizz’s yang—what on earth to do when humidity’s not a problem.
What do we do when our hair’s as dry as the air?
So, humidity’s gone. What now?
As temperatures drop, humidity levels decrease, which means your hair is exposed to about as much moisture as the Sahara Desert.
During the summer, humidity leads to frizz, oiliness, and a general sene of wow-this-has-gotten-out-of-control, which is why heavy moisture products can work to control and weigh down the hair.
But in the fall? Those same heavy moisture products will weigh down your hair wayyyy too much—leaving it feeling greasy/limp/generally-hard-to-work-with, as there’s no need to create that extra barrier to prevent the moisture within your hair from being ravaged by the air’s moisture content.
In contrast, your hair often becomes more prone to dryness and static in the cooler months.
So, instead of adding more moisture, we need to be focused on hydration.
Hydration means giving your hair the right balance of water and nutrients without overloading it.
Lightweight hydrating products help lock in the moisture that’s naturally in your hair while maintaining volume and bounce—something the weather can’t steal from you and doesn’t need to be guarded so heavily against like the season we just left behind.
What ingredients should we be looking for when choosing products for the cooler, drier months?
On the topic of hydration, there’s two things we want to mainly be looking for: hyaluronic acid and aloe vera.
Let’s start with the powerhouse that is hyaluronic acid—
Fun fact: hyaluronic acid is known for its ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.
It is *excellent* at attracting and retaining moisture without making the hair feel greasy or heavy and it deposits moisture deep into the hair shaft—making your hair feel plumper and more elastic. That second part is *hugely* important for preventing breakage in the drier months.
And, unlike heavy oils or emollients, it’s lightweight and penetrates the hair without coating it—leaving it soft and nourished without weighing it down.
…and did someone say aloe vera?
Our beloved aloe vera is rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, which means that, at the same time it’s smelling and feeling like heaven, it’s also soothing, providing deep hydration by replenishing water content in your hair, and guaranteeing that your mane will be incredibly smooth and shiny.
And, for added benefit—aloe soothes scalp irritation caused by seasonal dryness/cooler weather & its lightweight consistency means it won’t cause buildup on your hair/scalp.
