Tackle Frizz & Embrace Heatless Styling

Hi, besties!

Welcome baaaaaack to the CocoLemon Hair blog! Per usual, I’m here to deliver some information with more words than anyone needs to use ever, but hopefully leave you feeling more confident about caring for and styling your hair at home!

Today’s TED Talk is dedicated to all things smooth, sleek, healthy, and heatless. It seems like we’re turning a corner with haircare that I know we’re suuuuuuper happy about over here at Coco, and I want to talk a little bit about how to get the results we want out of our hair (especially in the middle of the *cries* most brutal season for styling and caring for it).

Summer is a time of sun, sand, and unbelievably unpredictable hair and its like… so. fun. :)

It’s dry, it’s frizzy, it’s unwilling to listen to us a lot of the time. And if you’re one of the lucky ones that lives in a state like our dear, sweet Virginia, the air is carrying 4987234 gallons of water at any given moment and trying to ruin every bit of the look you put together when you woke up this morning.

So today we’re going to talk about how to remain mindful of the fragile state our hair is in during the summer months while also not sacrificing the looks we’re trying to serve.

It’s a challenge, but it’s not impossible. And we’re going to go over the science of what on earth is happening to create the frizzy fun during this time of year, the products we adoreeeee here at Coco for taming it, and then we’ll hit you with some heatless styling methods that give us the styles we want to achieve while not adding insult to injury and making our hair even more mad. Not to mention, some of the heatless curl systems are confusing af to look at and I want to make sure you feel prepared knowing what to pick for your pretty lil’ head!

Let;s go revamp your styling routine, xoxo

Step 1: Let’s talk about the science!

Why does frizz happen and how do we prevent it?

Anyone who knows us over here at Coco can tell you that there’s *nothing* we geek out over more than learning. More specifically, there’s nothing we geek out more about than the science of what’s happening with every product in our building. Color lines, styling products, hot tools, you name it. Whatever it may be, I promise there’s been a far-too-lengthy conversation in our backroom about how they work.

So we’re here today to invite you into a backroom-style chat about frizz control.

One of the major factors that’s going to contribute to combating frizz is moisture! Noticeable frizz happens pretty exclusively on dryer hair—whether it’s barely dry or the driest of the dry. And it happens because your hair strand(s) is(are) seeking moisture. So, if the moisture is missing in your haircare routine, the only place it has to seek it out is the air. if you dread dealing with frizz in the humid months, this is why!

If this applies to you, we definitely want to look into adding more moisture into your routine. Differing levels of dryness will want/need differing levels of moisture, so make sure the products you buy are made for you! We don’t want to overwhelm or weigh-down your hair and for those that need a little bit more, we want it to be effective.

Now… here’s THE COOLEST PART.

You know how we just talked about your hair seeking moisture in the air if it’s lacking it?

The air is doing the exact same thing.

Hair, much like air, is hygroscopic.

Not sure what the means? Have no fear, i’m here to blow your mind :)

Hygroscopy is “the phenomenon of attracting and holding water molecules via either absorption or adsorption from the surrounding environment.”

In short, your hair is doing the exact same thing to the air as the air is doing to your hair. It’s pretty badass.

So, managing the level of moisture in our hair depends entirely on the content of water in the air.

For that reason, we have products that encourage two very different things—some have humectant properties and some have anti-humectant properties.

And, for the sake of the conversation around frizz and heatless styling, we’re going to lean on our anti-humectants. They’re doing the MOST in the months where humidity is rampant, our hair tends to be much drier, and our strands are screaming for a second line of defense.

And we loveeeee them for it!

So what’s going on with our dear anti-humectants? These lovely tools are super effective at picking up where our efforts to add moisture left off. Where moisture is filling in all the pockets of hair that lack it, anti-humectants are sealing your strand off from any vulnerabilities that might have been missed.

Picture anti-humectants like the top coat for your hair when it comes to frizz-prevention. Without them, it looks a little like this: the moment you step outside, the air has direct and complete access to do whatever it wants to your hair. With them, there’s a pretty solid shield between your hair strand and the moisture in the air that’s desperately trying to seek shelter. It combats the hygroscopic factor of both hair and air. Your hair is less aware there’s moisture to be absorbed from the air and the air doesn’t even know there’s a place to offload water molecules into your hair!

It’s pretty freakin’ cool.

Step 2: Snag some products at CocoLemon that your frizz will hate, but you will love.

Now that we’ve (hopefully) got you feeling a lil’ more confident about what’s happening with your hair and where on earth to start when it comes to tackling frizz/dryness/weather, let’s look at some of our fav Coco products that will aid in getting you the hair of your dreams! These babies will get the job handled and we love them for that.

Eufora Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner

Eufora’s Smoothing Shampoo & Smoothing Conditioner are the perfect soldiers for the war on frizz. They’re for those of you that need intense hydration and want to start preventing frizz from step 1 of your haircare routine! It will nourish & seal the cuticle for ultimate frizz prevention, increases moisture retention (within your hair, not that pesky humidity), and leaves hair silky and smooth. This one’s a 10/10 if you have coarse hair!

Eufora’s Beautifying Serum is going to be great for those of you with finer hair that doesn’t need as much of a punch with the moisture! It locks in moisture, utilizes antioxidants to protect the hair, AND can be used on your skin and scalp :)

Eufora’s Smoothing oil therapy is going to pair to PERFECTION with the Smoothing shampoo & conditioner above. All three products are part of Eufora’s Smoothing system and will give you smooth and shiny hair without weighing it down (but much like the shampoo/conditioner, this is likely a bit too much for our fine-hair friends), seals the cuticle to lock out humidity, and protects hair from oxidative stressors.

ELEVEN’s Frizz Control Shaping Cream smoothes the most stubborn of the stubborn frizz. This one’s for the curly girls out there and, while it’s combatting frizz will also define hair’s natural curl & wave without weighing it down.

ELEVEN’s Smooth & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum is a lightweight treatment that’s perfect for allll hair types! It softens the hair in a way that provides a lot of control over crazy flyaways and is truly super effective on any hair texture.

Pro Tip: If you’re someone with finer curly hair or if you don’t have curly hair at all, I find mixing the Shaping Cream and the Anti-Frizz Serum in your hand and then working it through your hair strands gives a *chef’s kiss* level of smooth and shine that isn’t too much for finer hair but packs the punch you might be looking for if your hair is more inclined to frizz.

Step 3: You know the science, you’ve secured the goods. You’re *so* ready for heatless styling.

I don’t know about you, but the heatless styling options these days are overwhelming. And, not only are they overwhelming, but how on earth are you supposed to figure out which one to use?! Much like haircare products, it’s hard to know what’s going to work for your hair and the vision you have.

So here are some heatless styling options that we <3 and we hope you do too!

Heatless Curling Set

This heatless curling set by Kitsch is great for those of you with long hair! It’s comfortable to wear overnight and boy does it worrrrrrrk! If you’re someone who loves the bounce and body of the blow-out look but you want a little more curl and staying. power., this one is for you!

Flexi Rods

These Kitsch Flexi Rods (and flexi rods in general) are AMAZING for curl definition. This is for everyone with curly hair or those of you that want curlier hair than the look that the heatless curling set above can give. They’re comfortable, they’re effective, and these are great for shorter hair that doesn’t get the definition it needs or is harder to secure around the longer, wider overnight curl options.

Heatless Curling Headband

This one’s CRAZY to look at but is great for people who love the definition of a curling wand & want to ditch the heat. They’ve made the sectioning easy on you and all you have to do is grab the hair directly under each rod.

As always, thank you so much for hanging out with us here on the CocoLemon blog. We love talking all things science and problem-solving and we hope this left you feeling more confident when choosing your frizz-fighting products. And we hope that confidence allows you to fully embrace heatless styling in these crazy humid summer months!
