Summer Tips and Tricks!
Welcome back, besties! And we’re here to hit ya with another edition of Do’s & Don’ts—where we, your trusted Coco Crew, give you our favorite tips and tricks for achieving gorgeous, happy hair!
In this episode, we're diving deep (…I couldn’t not…) into one of the spookiest times of year outside of Halloween.
It’s pool season, baddies.
So let’s all take a deep breath, cross our fingers, and take a look at some of the best ways to keep your fine, medium, coarse, blonde, brunette, red (ily!), and extension hair the happiest it can be in this scariest of seasons.

POOL SEASON
Summer Do’s and Don’ts—
Do: Be aware of the non-hair-related products you’re using in the sun!
WHY? Your sunscreen matters more than you think! If you’re a blondie or extension girlie, it’s going to be pivotal to check the ingredients so there’s no shift to the color/extension services you’ve invested in.
Don't: Use sunscreens with certain ingredients.
WHY? Like we said above, your color and extensions will thank you if you look out for certain things in your sunscreens. The most common ones to look out for are Avobenzone and Octocrylene.
Do: Make sure your hair can handle it if you wanna dunk that head fully underwater.
WHY? This one’s looking out for those blondies and extension girlies once again, but it’s important for everyone to consider! While it’s safer for those with darker hair and no extensions, any chemically-treated (or ocean tbh) water is going to be a little tricky for people who get their color done professionally.
Don't: Cannonball into that pool if you want to make sure your color stays *chef’s kiss*.
WHY? There’s a real chance when you come back up for air, that hair’s gonna be a totally different color than when you dove in. Be mindful of the investment you’ve made into your color or extensions before you jump in!
Do: Remember to take your most beloved products with you on vaca!
WHY? Because that week without them + any exposure to sun and sand is going to have some negative effects on both your color and potentially the overall health of your hair!
Don't: Forget to bring them back home with you :)
WHY? Because we’ve all done it and it’s much more likely you’ll wait until tomorrow at the earliest to go pick up new product & your hair’s not going to love that either.
Do: Remember that everyone’s hair needs hydration in the summer months!.
WHY? While summer is everyone’s fav time of year, it’s typically our body/hair’s most trying time. Everything is getting wet, dry, wet, dry, and hair really needs hydration in the summer months in a way you might not normally need the rest of the year.
Don't: Just stick to the same routine you use in the Fall/Winter/Spring!
WHY? Our hair has completely different needs during the summer season because it’s (normally) being exposed to the elements for much longer stretches of time and with direct sun exposure. It’s going to need a lil’ extra love in the form of some extra hydrating products. You and your hair will thank you!

We had to throw in this angel product because, while it’s not based in hydration, hydration, hydration like the rest of this list, it’s going to be incredibly important for any heat styling you do this summer! It’s a multipurpose styler to use before you pull out any hot tools—it assists with curl memory, keeps hair smooth throughout the day, and protects from heat-styling damage over 400 degrees!
ELEVEN Smooth & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum:
WHY? This one’s going to be great for all the frizz that finds us in the summer months! It’s a lightweight treatment for all hair types—Argan Oil softens the hair to keep it sleek and smooth with ease :)
Bonus Tips from your CocoLemon Hairstylists for Summer Hair Maintenance—
This one’s specifically for the extension girlies—we know the summer is a trying time to care for your investment!
Braids, but make sure they’re Bubble Braids!
The problem with regular braids is that your natural hair will pop out of them, which can lead to a lot of matting for those of you who have extensions of any kind!
The key to summer braids with extensions (because they’re essential in a lot of situations) is to make sure you’re doing bubble braids. Our extension guru Rachel Lane says “think about the guy on the motorcycle who’s got his beard bubble-braided to keep it safe from the wind. The bubble braids prevent flyaways from popping out randomly and keeps the hair exactly where it needs to stay.”
Chlorine and Salt Water are off-limits if you want to protect your extension investment.
The same rule applies from the list above—not only will it change the color of your extensions, but it can be really damaging. Keeping your hair up and out of the water is going to be the best decision you can make!
